Amari Cooper shrugs off NFL’s most improbable catch

During Cleveland’s 19-17 victory over San Francisco on Sunday, Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper leaped high between 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward and safety Talanoa Hufanga to pull down a reception along the sideline for a 26-yard gain.

While “Mossed” has come into the NFL vocabulary because of Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss’ propensity for reaching over defenders to catch passes, the former Alabama All-American was asked on Thursday if he’d “Coop” anybody else in this week’s game.

“Given the opportunity, I’ll definitely try to go up there and make plays like that as much as I can,” Cooper said. “It’s really a routine catch, so as long as I get the opportunities, then somebody will get Cooped every week.”

NFL Next Gen Stats categorized Cooper’s catch as anything but routine. The league analytics service graded Cooper’s catch as the most improbable completion of the 2023 season based on the distance, coverage and proximity to the sideline. Next Gen Stats gave the pass a 9 percent probability of completion.

“I did see that,” Cooper said. “I don’t know how they come up with those numbers, but it was impressive, I guess. …

“It felt pretty easy. It’s something I’ve been doing my whole life.”

A third-and-6 throw from the Cleveland 32-yard line on the first series of the second half, the completion moved the Browns toward a field goal that tied the score at 10-10 on their way to pinning the first loss of the season on San Francisco.

Cooper had four receptions for 108 yards against the 49ers for his second 100-yard performance in Cleveland’s past three games and the 32nd of his NFL career. Only 39 players in NFL history have had more.

P.J. Walker did the passing for the Browns on Sunday in his first action of the 2023 season with quarterback Deshaun Watson sidelined by a shoulder injury.

Watson did not practice on Wednesday, but returned to the field for limited work on Thursday as the Browns prepare to play the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

“It’ll be a huge boost,” Cooper said about the possibility of Watson returning to the lineup against the Colts. “Deshaun is our guy. At the end of the day, we all know who Deshaun is. We’ve seen all the plays that he’s been able to make throughout his career. It’s just like any other team. You’re confident when your starting guy is in the lineup 100 percent, so it’ll be a huge boost.”

Cleveland will carry a 3-2 record to Indianapolis.

The Browns defense has yielded an average of 200.4 yards per game this season, which is the lowest figure in the NFL.

Cooper called the performance of the Cleveland defense in 2023 “extremely galvanizing.”

“I know just me personally when I see the defense making plays, it makes me want to make plays out there,” Cooper said. “Like, after the game, after I made that catch, (defensive end) Myles (Garrett) came up to me, he was like, ‘Yeah, that one got me up out of my seat.’ And so it’s the same way with me. When he makes a sack or a strip sack or something like that, it’s going to get me up out of my seat. It’s going to make me say, ‘OK, I got to step my game up.’”
