Amari Cooper makes history for Cleveland Browns

Amari Cooper became the first player in Cleveland Browns history to record back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons on Sunday.

Cooper caught a pass from quarterback Joe Flacco for a 53-yard gain on the first snap of the game against the Houston Texans on Sunday to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in the 2023 season. The former Alabama All-American reached 1,000 receiving yards for the seventh time in his career and his second time with Cleveland.

Cooper had 78 receptions for 1,160 yards and nine touchdowns in 2022 for the Browns. He entered Sunday’s game with 61 receptions for 985 yards and three touchdowns in the 2023 campaign.

Cooper posted the 17th 1,000-yard receiving season in Browns history. He became the third Cleveland player with two. But wide receiver Mac Speedie and tight end Ozzie Newsome did not do so in consecutive seasons.

Speedie had 1,146 receiving yards in 1947 and 1,028 receiving yards in 1949. Neither of those seasons came when the Browns were in the NFL. Cleveland was in the All-American Football Conference, which folded after the 1949 season when the NFL absorbed the Browns, Baltimore Colts and San Francisco 49ers.

A former Colbert County High School and Alabama standout, Newsome had 1,002 receiving yards in 1981 and 1,001 in 1984.

Other Cleveland players with 1,000-yard receiving seasons include Paul Warfield in 1968, Webster Slaughter in 1989, Kevin Johnson in 2001, Antonio Bryant in 2005, Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow in 2007, Josh Gordon in 2013, Gary Barnidge in 2015, Terrelle Pryor in 2016 and Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry in 2019.

Cooper also had 1,000 receiving yards in the 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020 seasons. He played for the Oakland Raiders in the first two and the Dallas Cowboys in the latter two and played for both teams in 2018.
