An 85-year-old woman walking her dog near a lake was killed Monday when she tried to save her dog from an alligator attack, reports say.

WPTV Channel 5 reports the incident occurred around noon at Spanish Lakes Fairways, a 55-plus living community.

The alligator, estimated at 10 feet long and weighing between 600 and 700 pounds, grabbed the dog. When the woman tried to help the dog, she ended up being attacked by the alligator, reports say.

The woman’s body was recovered but her identity has not been released. The dog survived the attack but its condition is unknown, CBS Miami reports.

A trapper was able to capture the alligator, CNN reports. It was removed from the lake but reports did not say what was done with the alligator.
