All-around effort earns Huntsville Player of the Week honors

The Week 11 Huntsville Football Player of the Week had an outstanding all-around performance in the final week of the Alabama High School Athletic Association regular season.

St. John Paul II Catholic quarterback/linebacker Luke Songy got 55 percent of the 5,947 votes cast in the poll. The senior ran for three touchdowns, passed for two more and had two interceptions – including a pick-6 – in a 42-20 win over Elkmont.

Quarterback Jacks McClung of Huntsville was second in the voting after he completed 20-of-21 passes for 332 yards and six touchdowns in a 56-13 win over Hazel Green.

Hartselle’s Peyton Steele was third in the poll. Steele ran for 146 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries in a 35-21 win over Bob Jones.

Voting for the Huntsville Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.

In Week 11, more than 41,000 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
