ALEA worked 6 traffic deaths, 1 boating fatality over Memorial Day weekend
Six people died in traffic incidents and one boating fatality over Memorial Day weekend in investigations worked by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
The agency was also involved in rescuer a swimmer in distress on the Alabama Gulf Coast, according to statistics released Wednesday by ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor.
ALEA’s statistics do do not include fatalities worked by other law enforcement agencies in the state.
“Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives this weekend,” Taylor said in a statement. “These tragedies highlight the need for continued enforcement and public education to prevent such incidents in the future.”
Between 12:01 a.m. Friday and midnight Monday, state troopers investigated six traffic deaths that occurred in Autauga, Calhoun, Covington, Lauderdale, Marshall and Walker counties.
Four drivers, one passenger and one motorcyclist were killed in the incidents worked by ALEA.
“These tragic incidents underline the importance of road safety and the ongoing need for vigilance and adherence to traffic laws by all motorists,” the agency said.
Sunday was the only day over the holiday weekend where troopers did not investigate a traffic death.
ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division worked the drowning of a boater Monday on Logan Martin Lake, which the agency classified as a boating fatality.
Delbert W. Shaw, 72, of Rosedale, was trying to dock a boat near Rebecca Lane in a slough on the lake in St. Clair County.
Shaw was trying to help dock a 2016 21-foot Crest Pontoon boat when he fell into the water.
“The incident serves as a solemn reminder of the critical need for safety measures and precautions while enjoying Alabama’s waterways,” the agency said.
During the holiday weekend, ALEA implemented increased patrols, driver license checkpoints, and public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing fatalities and injuries, the agency said.
The agency’s Marine Patrol Division issued 868 Marine Safety Warnings and conducted 740 vessel inspections and 53 vessel assists over the weekend.
The division also made a record 22 arrests for boating under the influence.
The Highway Patrol Division investigating 324 traffic crashes, issued 350 seat belt citations and made 29 driving under the influence arrests.
“Despite these efforts, the agency remains committed to enhancing its strategies and working with the community to promote safer driving and boating practices,” ALEA said.
The Aviation Unit, along with the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Fire Departments, participated in the Rescue Swimmer Detail.
The unit performed 12 patrol flights and responded to six calls for service, which included a boater in distress, a kayak in distress, a capsized jet ski and three swimmers in distress.
While on a patrol flight on Saturday, the crew chief spotted a swimmer in distress and deployed a rescue swimmer to assist the victim to shore.
