Aldiâs purchase of Winn-Dixie, Harveys will impact 400 stores, 40 in Alabama
Aldi’s acquisition of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets will add more than 400 locations to the German discount grocery chain’s roster, according to data from the company.
The German supermarket chain announced Wednesday it was acquiring Winn-Dixie and Harveys from Jacksonville, Fla.-based Southeastern Grocers. The deal includes grocery store locations across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The acquisition almost doubles Aldi’s presence in Alabama. The chain currently operates 40 stores in Alabama and is purchasing the 39 Winn-Dixie locations in the state, some of which will be rebranded as Aldi stores while others will continue to operate as Winn-Dixie.

Aldi officials said they are evaluating which stores will be rebranded.
“ALDI will operate Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores with the same level of care and focus on quality and service, as we also evaluate which locations will convert to the ALDI format to better support the neighborhoods we’ll now have the privilege of serving,” said Jason Hart, CEO, ALDI USA based in Batavia, Illinois. “For those stores we do not convert, our intention is that these continue to operate as Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores.”
In addition to the Alabama locations, Aldi will add 28 stores in Louisiana, six in Mississippi, 25 in Georgia and 299 in Florida, site of most of the Harveys locations. It also builds on the chain’s announcement it was opening 120 new stores across the country by the year’s end with a goal of 2,400 total stores in the U. S. by 2024.
The Aldi/Southeastern Grocery deal is expected to close in 2024.
