Aldi opening 120 new stores
Aldi, the German grocer that’s built a cult following in the U.S., will open 120 new stores in 2023.
In a statement, the chain said its working to have more than 2,400 locations across the country by the end of the year. Aldi has opened 35 stores in the first quarter of 2023, with the additions attracting some 5.3 million new customers as of last month.
The company also plans for add some 2,000 new employees.
Low-cost and inflationary pressures are leading customers to its stores, officials said.
“While inflation is undoubtedly driving unprecedented demand for affordable groceries, we know that once customers experience the ALDI difference, they keep shopping with us, even when the economy improves,” Jason Hart, CEO of Aldi’s U.S. division, said in a statement. “Our growth is led by our customers, and they continue to want more Aldi locations coast-to-coast.”
Last year, Aldi opened and remodeled 139 stores, bringing in some 9.4 million new customers and driving double-digit growth year-over-year.
Thew new openings will “span the continental U.S.,” the announcement said, “including the rapidly growing Southeast region,” where Aldi recently opened its 26th regional headquarters and distribution center in Loxley, Alabama. This year, Aldi is adding stores in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, both new markets for the grocer.
