Alamo Drafthouse no longer coming to Birmingham

Alamo Drafthouse will no longer be part of the planned redevelopment of Birmingham’s former Powell Steam Plant.

The Texas-based upscale chain of theatres, with special locations in major American cities, had announced back in February 2022 that Birmingham would be home to its first cinema in the Deep South, with an expected opening in the fall of 2023. That was later moved to this spring.

The theatre was to have nine screens and be the anchor tenant on the property.

Alabama Power, which owns the Powell Steam Plant property, is a partner in the redevelopment venture. Alabama Power spokesman Anthony Cook confirmed that Alamo Drafthouse is no longer part of the plan.

“Alabama Power and Orchestra Partners have mutually agreed to make changes in Powell Steam Plant’s development team. Both parties remain committed to the City’s growth and long-term success, and we look forward to great things ahead,” the company said in a statement.

Alamo Drafthouse, founded in 1997, screens first-run movies, independent films, classic movies and special events tailored to each location, which offer full drink and food menus.

The Powell Avenue Steam Plant was built in 1895 by the Consolidated Electric Light & Power Co. It provided steam and electricity for downtown and powered the city streetcar system.

The plant was acquired by Alabama Power in 1952 when the two companies merged.
