Alabamians urged to be on alert for overnight storms

Yet another round of strong to severe storms will be possible in Alabama overnight tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

And these could also bring a tornado or two with them.

These storms may arrive when most Alabamians are asleep, and the weather service urged the public to make sure they have a reliable way to get weather warnings overnight should they be necessary.

Have two reliable ways to get warnings if they become necessary overnight.

The Storm Prediction Center is maintaining a Level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather for part of west Alabama tonight.

A Level 3 risk means numerous severe storms will be possible.

The weather service has included a risk for tornadoes in the mix, as well as damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain.

The weather service and SPC as of 8:30 p.m. was in the process of working on a watch — likely a tornado watch — that will be issued in the next hour or so. It will likely cover areas west of the Interstate 65 corridor, but the exact area is still unknown.

The SPC is watching supercell storms in eastern Mississippi that are expected to move eastward into Alabama later tonight. Forecasters said that a “risk for all hazards of severe weather appears to be increasing across western Alabama.”

A tornado watch is already in effect in Mississippi all the way to the Alabama border.
