Alabamians pay among the highest renters insurance in the nation
Alabama renters are paying more than they used to in rent, and you can add another expense to that price tag: A hefty renters insurance premium.
Alabama renters pay the second highest average renters insurance bills in the country, trailing only neighboring Mississippi. The average renter in Alabama can expect to pay roughly $362 per year, or around $30 per month, according to data from Quote Wizard, an insurance comparison and shopping site.
For comparison, the national average for renters insurance is about $219 per year.

What are the reasons for Alabama’s high insurance costs? For one thing, the weather. The state has dealt with severe storms for much of this week, and that’s a trend, with multiple tornado seasons throughout the year and the threat of hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico. According to Bankrate, the state’s weather patterns play a big part in why its insurance premiums are higher than the national average.
Those renters insurance premiums might not seem incredibly high, but the price stings even worse for Alabama and Mississippi, which each rank in the bottom five for median household income, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Alabama homeowners also pay more than the national average in homeowners insurance, but the state isn’t as close to the top of the list. The average Alabama homeowner pays about $1,631 per year for homeowners insurance, which ranks 18th in the nation, according to Bankrate.com.
