Alabama’s Ryan Williams named SEC freshman of the week after 2-TD performance
Alabama football’s 63-0 win over Western Kentucky was quite the debut for freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams. The 17-year-old made two catches, both of them going for long touchdowns.
He led all receivers for the Tide with 139 yards through the air. For his efforts in the season-opener, Williams was recognized with the SEC’s freshman of the week award on Monday, UA announced.
“A lot of attention gets thrown his way but he’s just gone about it really humble and matter-of-fact, stay the course, just go to work every day, attitude,” DeBoer said after the game Saturday. “And our guys really appreciate that.”
The youngster shared the award with Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava.
Williams was DeBoer’s first major recruiting win after the head coach took over for Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa. He was a five-star prospect out of Saraland.
He started the game against the Hilltoppers, a moment that surprised even him.
“He was like ‘Ryan,’(and) I just ran out there,” Williams said, showing off a shocked expression for assembled reporters after the game. “It was a blessing.”
Williams wasn’t the only Crimson Tide player to earn an award from the conference. Safety Keon Sabb was named defensive player of the week, after picking off two passes against the Hilltoppers.
After the young wideout’s effort, quarterback Jalen Milroe said he expected him to continue to improve throughout the season.
“That man is 17 years old and he’s balling,” Milroe said. “I’m just proud of him but I know he wants to constantly get better, constantly wants to improve, and that’s something that’s just going to be evident when it comes to his success this year.”
Alabama faces South Florida Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
