Alabama’s newest music festival is coming to iconic venue

A new music festival is set for fall 2025 at one of the most iconic venues in Alabama. Magic City Flow Fest was announced this week by organizers, coming Oct. 18 to Legion Field in Birmingham.

The festival, which focuses on hip-hop music, is the newest event from Johnny Grimes, one of the organizers for Furnace Fest and the Iron Hills Country Music Festival.

“We’re completing the trifecta with this one. Stoked to be teaming up with my good friends Daniel Kyle McCartney and Chad Johnson to bring Birmingham an unforgettable day of hip hop!,” Grimes said in a Wednesday post on Facebook. “Mark your calendars: October 18th is going to be one for the ages. The lineup is stacked, and we’ll be dropping the full announcement next week … you won’t want to miss it.”

Other details weren’t immediately available for Magic City Flow Fest, but the initial announcement on social media promises “an unmatched lineup” and “one unforgettable night.” In their posts, organizers said the lineup would be revealed at noon on Friday, April 18.

Furnace Fest and Iron Hills both are scheduled in October at Sloss Furnaces. Furnace Fest, a three-day event that focuses on heavy rock, thrash, punk and metal, is scheduled Friday through Sunday, Oct. 3-5. Iron Hills, a two-day festival featuring country artists, is set for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11-12.

With the addition of Magic City Flow Fest on the following Sunday, that makes three music festivals on three consecutive weekends from Grimes and his colleagues.

Legion Field, 400 Graymont Ave. West, is an iconic landmark in Birmingham that celebrated its 100th year in 2027. Most people think of sports when Legion Field is mentioned; it’s the longtime home of the Magic City Classic, the annual HBCU game featuring Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University.

For about four decades, Legion Field also was the site of the Iron Bowl, the much-anticipated game pitting the Alabama Crimson Tide against the Auburn Tigers. Other sports events, such as flag football for the 2022 World Games, have been held at Legion Field, as well.

But the stadium, which is owned by the City of Birmingham, has seen its share of big-name concert acts in the past, such as the Rolling Stones, U2 and Pink Floyd. More recently, Legion Field has been the site of music events such as 2015’s Funk Fest and concerts in the former Jazz in the Park series.

In January, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said he envisioned new opportunities for Legion Field, and suggested “a sportsplex … for our families and children at all levels of sports and also attracting leagues to come to our city from a sports and revenue standpoint.”
