Alabama’s longest serving sheriff reports to prison on Friday: ‘Still in the fight of my life,’ Mike Blakely says
Telling supporters he is “still in the fight of my life,” former Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely announced on social media that he will begin serving his prison sentence on Friday in Franklin County.
Blakely, who was the state’s longest serving sheriff, was convicted in August 2021 of one count of theft and one count of using his position for personal gain.
The theft charge was related to his campaign fund and dealings with Red Brick consulting, while the personal gain charge was related to$29,050 in interest free loans from a safe that held money belonging to inmates.
On Facebook, Blakely stated:
“It seems like I’m in a race with no finish line, but I am humbled beyond anyone’s imagination for the outpouring of support and kindness shown by so many friends and supporters. The hundreds of Facebook comments, calls, and prayers are so encouraging. I start my sentence in Franklin county this Friday. I will be just fine, and I will continue to fight until I win. God Bless!”
The state originally brought 13 charges against Blakely, who began serving as sheriff in 1983, the first of 10 terms. The jury had considered 10 charges of theft and use of position for personal gain — nine felonies and one misdemeanor. But they found Blakely not guilty on the other eight counts.
