Alabama’s Iron City Grill closing after 10 years in business

The Iron City Grill, the restaurant at Birmingham’s Iron City concert venue, is closing after 10 years in business.

Iron City, 513 22nd St. South, announced the news on Thursday via social media, saying Saturday would be the final day for dinner service at the grill. However, the grill will continue to be a space for private events, organizers said, and bar service will be available in the space during public events scheduled in April.

Here the full statement posted by Iron City on Facebook and Instagram:

“We have loved our time with the Iron City Grill, however, we have made the difficult decision to only host private events & offer bar service. Saturday (4/1) will be our final evening serving pre-show dinners. Even though the kitchen will be closed, the bar will be open for these events in April:

  • 4/5 Red McAdam & Sierra Bryan
  • 4/7 Local Colors
  • 4/8 Forest Isn’t Dead (JXDN afterparty)
  • 4/14 The Yellow Dandies & Golden Shoals
  • 4/21 Tyler Tisdal (Wilder Woods afterparty)
  • 4/22 Random Mountain Ramblers
  • 4/28 Adam Klein w/ Galactic Engineers

“With this being said, stay tuned for what we do with the space next.”

The Iron City Grill was a mainstay at the venue since Iron City opened in February 2013. The restaurant — part of a 22,000-square-foot entertainment complex — typically served sandwiches, burgers, salads, dinner entrees and more.

“The Grill, with its industrial-lux, comfortable and casual atmosphere, is in a beautifully refurbished old Southside building where they made good use of the original brick walls and the exposed ductwork,” Susan Swagler said in a 2014 restaurant review for AL.com. “It’s an open, soaring, space with lots of windows. … (The dishes) are inventive and varied and follow a farm-to-table model of using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. This menu is small but interesting with something for just about everyone.”

Initially, the grill was open for lunch and dinner, but in recent months was serving happy hour fare and dinner service, starting at 5 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. (See the current hours and menu here.)

Iron City, founded in 2013 by Birmingham’s Steve DeMedicis, was a $6 million project that linked two buildings and took more than two years to complete. The two-floor layout includes a main stage area that holds about 1,300 people, two smaller stages, two bars and a flexible space for private events, as well as a restaurant.

In summer 2022, the Iron City complex was sold to an affiliate of Adventurous Journeys (AJ) Capital Partners, a real-estate investment company that also owns hotels, resorts and entertainment venues such as Nashville’s Exit/In.
