Alabama’s coldest night of winter possible tonight: Single-digit lows expected

Alabama woke up to yet another frigid morning on Tuesday as a winter storm approached from the west.

South Alabama could get up to 4 inches of snow today, according to the National Weather Service, and winter storm warnings will be in effect through today.

North Alabama and the northern part of central Alabama aren’t expected to see any accumulating snow today, although the weather service will be closely watching the northern extent of today’s snowfall.

What’s more certain is continued cold temperatures statewide.

Very cold temperatures were reported across the state by the National Weather Service on Tuesday morning. Below are the coldest temperatures recorded from midnight until 6 a.m. Tuesday (not official lows, however):

  • Auburn: 21 degrees
  • Birmingham: 20 degrees

  • Greenville: 24 degrees
  • Haleyville: 17 degrees
  • Huntsville: 18 degrees
  • Mobile: 29 degrees
  • Montgomery: 25 degrees
  • Muscle Shoals: 20 degrees
  • Ozark: 29 degrees
  • Prattville: 23 degrees
  • Sylacauga: 21 degrees
  • Talladega: 21 degrees

Very cold temperatures are expected again today across the state, with most places not making it above freezing.

Much of north Alabama could be in the 20s all day.

Tonight could be the coldest night of the winter across Alabama.

The weather service thinks temperatures could reach the single digits across north Alabama. A cold weather advisory will be in effect for most of that area tonight, according to the weather service in Huntsville:

Central Alabama will fall into the low teens to even single digits, and a cold weather advisory will also be in effect for that region through Wednesday morning:

And south Alabama, which will likely have snow on the ground, will drop to the low teens, even for places like Mobile (tonight’s expected lows are at the top of this post).

An extreme cold warning will be in effect for south Alabama until Wednesday morning.

After tonight a slow warming trend will begin across Alabama
