Alabama’s Brandon Miller debuts new pregame intro after pat-down outcry
The lights dimmed in Coleman Coliseum. The crowd rose to its feet for pregame introductions and Brandon Miller, as he’s done all year, was announced second-to-last.
Yet, as opposed to the normal pregame handshake Miller’s done for the Crimson Tiide’s first 29 games of the season, Miller wasn’t patted down by walk-on Adam Cottrell. Instead, Miller went with a quick shoulder bump before the No. 2 Tide took on Auburn in its home finale.
His prior routine sparked an outcry with some deeming the gesture insensitive after Miller’s involvement in the Jan. 15 Tuscaloosa strip shooting became public knowledge. Miller was present when Jamea Jonae Harris, 23, was shot by Michael Davis. Davis received the gun from former Alabama player Darius Miles, who got it from the back of Miller’s car after texting him and asking for it.
Davis and Miles are being held without bond awaiting trial. Miller and Jaden Bradley, the other freshman on the strip, have been cleared by police and UA of any wrongdoing.
“That situation is on me,” Tide coach Nate Oats said on Tuesday. “We addressed it as a team. As soon as I brought it up to them, they immediately understood how it could be interpreted. We all felt awful about it. They explained to me that it’s like when TSA checks you before you get on a plane. Now Brandon’s cleared for takeoff. We, as the adults in the room, should’ve been more sensitive to how it could’ve been interpreted.”
Miller is averaging 19.7 points per game and is projected as a top-five selection in the upcoming NBA Draft.
