Alabama’s Australian punter James Burnip reviews Outback Steakhouse

Alabama football punter James Burnip came to Tuscaloosa from his native Australia. On Aug. 6, Burnip posted a photo on social media, showing that he was sampling one of the United States’ most visible representations of feux-Australian cuisine, Outback Steakhouse.

Burnip discussed his visit to the chain restaurant Thursday, saying he enjoyed the chain’s signature dish, the Bloomin’ Onion.

“It was pretty good, pretty solid,” Burnip said during a press conference. “That’s what I heard a lot since I’ve gotten here is ‘You gotta try the Bloomin’ Onion.’”

Burnip is entering his third season with the Crimson Tide and has been UA’s starting punter since winning the job in camp his first year. He noted the food in the south as one of the major culture differences from Australia.

The difference largely lies in preparation methods, according to the punter.

“You like to have it all fried,” Burnip said. “That as well is a lot different.”

Beyond that, he said the largest culture shock was the manners. Burnip said using “m’am” and “sir” isn’t often part of the vocabulary there, but he’s adopted them since moving to Tuscaloosa.

And as for Outback, he’s giving somewhat high marks.

“I had pasta with steak and shrimp I think,” Burnip said. “And yeah, it was pretty solid. It was a good feed, something different. I’d give a solid 7.5 (or) 8 out of 10.”

Burnip and his Alabama teammates are scheduled to continue preseason camp through Aug. 26. The Crimson Tide opens the season Sept. 2 against Middle Tennessee State.
