Alabama’s oldest Indian restaurant moving into Birmingham spot once home to Bogue’s

The restaurant that bills itself as Alabama’s oldest Indian restaurant will be moving at the end of the month.

Taj India, in business at various locations since 1986, is headed to the former Bogue’s Restaurant space at 3120 Clairmont Ave. S. at the end of the month, according to the restaurant. When the new location will be up and running is not yet clear.

For the past 26 years, Taj India has been at Highland Plaza on Highland Avenue. It is still currently in operation there.

Its neighbor, Highland Package, is also moving later this month, to 109 20th St. S., Station 121.

The moves comes due to the planned demolition of Highland Plaza and construction of a new apartment complex on the site of a former Western Supermarket, which discontinued operations in 2019.

The Western Supermarket on Highland Avenue was a local landmark, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making it a go-to for midnight grocery shoppers and those leaving bars or hospital graveyard shifts who needed to pick up essentials in the middle of the night.

The planned complex will feature 272 luxury apartment units, a 373-space parking garage and 10,000 square feet of retail and office space. The building on 2.59 acres will be 68 feet tall and include an outdoor pool and courtyard.

Bogue’s Restaurant, a staple of Birmingham’s culinary scene for 84 years, closed in 2022.

The restaurant, known for its breakfast offerings and Miss Ella’s sweet rolls, first opened its doors in 1938.
