Alabamaâs in CFP: Reaction fast, furious from Herbstreit to Kannell, former players, more
The Alabama Crimson Tide is back in the College Football Playoff.
The reaction has been fast and furious.
In the end, the CFP committee went with Nick Saban’s squad over the undefeated ACC champs in Florida State. The Tide’s strength of schedule stands at No. 5, while the Seminoles were a dismal 55th. The strength of records were similar with FSU No. 3 and Alabama No. 4.
“I think in looking at it, that was the decision with Alabama at No. 4,” CFP selection committee chair Boo Corrigan said. “Florida State is a different team through the first 11 weeks. Coach (Mike) Norvell, the players, their fans, an incredible season. But as you look at who they are as a team right now without Jordan Travis, without the offensive dynamic that he brings to it, they are a different teams. The committee voted Alabama No. 4 and Florida State 5.”
From a coaching standpoint, Corrigan said, the question is asked who do you want to play? Who don’t you want to play?
“We came back with the top four that we did,” he said.
The Tide was 3-1 against top 25 opponents and Florida State was 3-0.
“To me, this is a travesty to the sport because we go out there and play the game,” ESPN analyst Booger McFarland said on the broadcast. “Regardless of whether it looks good at quarterback position. Regardless of whether we win with offense, whether we win with defense, the name of the game is to win. There’s a reason that this has never been done. A Power 5 conference going undefeated and not getting into the playoff.
“I understand we want to look at style points, and who are we going to get in the best matchups? That’s not what this is about. This is understanding getting the four best teams. One team has a lost, and that’s Alabama. One team doesn’t, and that’s Florida State. The fact that this committee could take a Power 5 Conference champion that’s undefeated … those kids went out there and busted their behind and not get into the playoff based on the eye test. Mind you, this is the same Alabama team who needed a prayer in Jordan-Hare to beat an Auburn team that lost to New Mexico State.”
SEC Network analyst Greg McElroy commended the committee.
“I’m not shocked with the way Florida State played the last couple of weeks,” he said. “They just dropped off considerably at quarterback. It’s understandable, and I feel terrible for them. They did everything you could possibly ask them to do and here they are on the outside looking in. People will have big issues with this. They will as, ‘Why do we play the games?’ ‘Why are we looking at a team that is undefeated that did everything asked of them to punch their ticket? But the committee actually did the thing they talked about for the last 10 years. Forever it’s always been, ‘well, you know, it’s kind of the most easy to justify this team has zero losses. This team has one loss. Therefore, the zero loss team should be ahead of the one-loss team. This is the head to head. They took everything into account, took a step back. They acknowledged injury, which they talked about in the past and they put in the four best teams. And that is not an easy thing to do. I want to tip my cap to the committee.”
Kirk Herbstreit, who said Florida State was impressive against Florida in the Swamp, agreed with McElroy, not McFarland.
“To me, it is a reflection of what (Jordan Travis) meant to that team,” Herbstreit said. “… You’re comparing Alabama to Florida State. You got to give Alabama the nod even though they had a close game with Auburn in a rivalry game. They beat Georgia on a neutral site, and Georgia was the team. Alabama just beat them. You can’t take Alabama out of this. They have to be in. I think the committee did a great job. I tip my cap as well.”
