The first Alabama location of Emmy Squared Pizza is now open to the public. The Brooklyn-based pizza and burger restaurant opened its doors in Birmingham last week.

Located at The Summit (300 Summit Boulevard, suite 104), Emmy Squared Pizza features a menu of Detroit-style pizzas and burgers, as well as a menu of salads, appetizers, and a full bar. The restaurant takes the place of Abhi, which shuttered its location at The Summit in 2022 after five years in business.

Take a glance inside Emmy Squared and you’ll notice a new floorplan. The team outfitted the 2,590 square-foot space with 65 seats and a more open design. One wall of the restaurant features a nod to Birmingham with black and white photographs of Vulcan and the Alabama Theatre.

Emmy Squared is based in New York, but the restaurant chain has a tie to Birmingham. Pennington Pribbenow, the chain’s Chief Operations Officer, was born and raised in the city. In a press release, Pribbenow credited his connection to Birmingham for inspiring the opening of Emmy Squared at The Summit.

“Opening a new Emmy Squared Pizza in Birmingham is a special homecoming for me,” said Pribbenow.

THE MENU

Emmy Squared’s Detroit-style pizza features a square shape, fluffy focaccia-like dough, and cheesy “frico” crust. The rundown of pizzas include the “Colony”—made with red sauce, ezzo pepperoni, pickled jalapeños— and the “MVP (Most Valuable Pesto)”—house-made vodka sauce, red sauce, garlic parsley pesto, and sesame seed crust.

Also on the menu: a selection of burgers, including Le Big Matt— a half-pound served on a pretzel bun with American cheese, special “Sammy sauce,” greens, and pickles.
