Alabama’s D.Smooth takes third place on ‘The Voice’; Gina Miles wins Season 23

D.Smooth, an R&B singer from Alabama, took third place Tuesday night on the Season 23 finale of “The Voice.”

Gina Miles, a pop-rock singer from California, won the title on the NBC reality series, besting D.Smooth and three other contestants in the finals. Miles, 18, competed as a member of Niall Horan’s team, giving the newest “Voice” coach his first win.

D.Smooth, 25, a Birmingham native, competed on the show as a member of Kelly Clarkson’s team. He excelled in his performances, impressing all four coaches with covers of Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” and “Thinking Out Loud,” Khalid’s “Location,” Johnny Gill’s “My My My” and Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love.”

During the battle rounds, D.Smooth also performed a standout duet with teammate ALI, covering Allen Stone’s “Unaware.”

On Monday’s performance episode, Clarkson lauded D.Smooth for his talent and creativity.

“I am so glad that I got to even witness being around you,” Clarkson said. “You are so creative. You’re a producer, you’re a writer, you’re all of these things. And I think it’s just amazing, having this artist to work with to inspire me. I’m 41; you’re 25, and you’re inspiring me. It’s incredible. You are so crazy talented.”

In the end, though, it wasn’t enough for D.Smooth to take the crown. Typically, the new champ on “The Voice” receives a cash prize and a deal with Republic Records, a label owned by Universal Music Group.

Other members of the final five were Grace West (who took second place), Sorelle (fourth place) and NOIVAS (fifth place). West and NOVIAS were on Blake Shelton’s team; Sorelle was on Chance the Rapper’s team.

Tuesday’s finale and results show was a two-hour affair featuring guest performances by CeeLo Green, Maroon 5, Toosii, Diplo, Lily Rose and “Voice” contestants from previous years. It also marked Shelton’s final appearance as a “Voice” coach, and celebrated his time on the show. The country star is retiring from the job after appearing in all 23 seasons and scoring nine wins. Shelton will be replaced by Reba McEntire in Season 24.

All five finalists performed with their coaches on Tuesday’s episode. D.Smooth and Clarkson (briefly known as “K.Smooth”) teamed for a duet on “Slow Dancing in the Dark” by Joji.

The new “Voice” winner was announced at the end of the episode, keeping viewers in suspense until just before the credits rolled. Most of the show was broadcast live, although some of the performances were recorded in advance.

“Kelly, I love you to death, girl,” D.Smooth said to Clarkson on the finale. “Thank you for seeing me for who I am, and allowing me to shine. I’m so grateful for you. You’re a blessing to my life. Thank you so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

D. Smooth is the fourth contestant from Alabama make the finals on “The Voice.” Dexter Roberts, a country singer from Fayette, took third place on on Season 16 in May 2019. Kirk Jay, a country-soul singer who lives in Montgomery, took third place on Season 15 in December 2018. Red Marlow, a country singer from Rogersville, took fourth place during Season 13 in December 2017.

Alabama’s never had a winner on “The Voice” during its 12-year history on television. However, more than 30 contestants from the state have made their marks on the show over the years, starting with Nakia Reynoso in Season 1 and continuing through this year with four — count ‘em, four — Alabama singers moving through the competition in Season 23.
