Alabama’s Nick Saban reacts to firings of Jimbo Fisher and Zach Arnett

After Saturday’s Texas A&M football win over Mississippi State, both teams fired their respective coaches, Jimbo Fisher and Zach Arnett. Fisher’s termination was announced on Sunday, while the Bulldogs waited until Monday to let Arnett go.

On Monday, Alabama head coach Nick Saban was asked about his reaction to the two firings.

“I don’t ever want to see anybody get let go, whatever we want to call it, in this business,” Saban said. “I know how hard everybody works. I know how difficult it is to sort of build a program, to get players to compete at a high level on a consistent basis, and just have a lot of respect for people who really work hard to try and change the lives of the guys that they’re coaching.”

Fisher was an offensive coordinator for Saban at LSU. Since then, the two have had a famous public feud during the offseason ahead of the 2022 season, after Saban alleged that Texas A&M got its highly ranked recruiting class by using NIL deals and Fisher took umbrage, calling Alabama’s coach “a narcissist” and his comments “despicable.”

The two have publicly downplayed the beef since then. Alabama beat Texas A&M in College Station this season, part of the Aggies 6-4 overall record.

Arnett took over after Mike Leach’s death before Mississippi State’s bowl game last season. The Bulldogs are currently 4-6 on the season, but just 1-6 in SEC play.

“We are in a business that you get evaluated based on your outcomes and performance,” Saban said. “I hate to see anybody have to go through this. I’ve been fired before. It’s no fun, it’s no fun for your family. But I’m sure that both those guys have great reputations in terms of what they’ve been able to accomplish over the course of their career and I’m sure they’ll have many more opportunities to be successful in the future.”
