Alabama’s Caleb Downs finalist for Shaun Alexander Award, given to top freshman

Alabama’s Caleb Downs has been named a finalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award.

The award, which goes to the best freshman college football player in the country and named for former Alabama running back Shaun Alexander, is given by the Maxwell Football Club.

Downs is one of five finalists for this year’s award and is joined by Rueben Bain (Miami), Kevin Concepcion (NC State), Noah Fifita (Arizona) and Dillon Thieneman (Purdue). The winner will be announced on Dec. 29.

Former Alabama standout Will Anderson Jr. won the award after his 2020 year.

Downs led the Crimson Tide and ranks fourth in the SEC with 95 tackles, including 2.5 for loss. He has two interceptions, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. In addition, Downs has returned for punts for 87 yards and a touchdown.
