Alabama woman’s TikTok chronicles family life with 2 kids in $10,000 shed turned into tiny house

An Alabama woman is getting attention on TikTok by telling the story of how she and her family converted a $10,000 shed into a stylish cottage fit for herself, her husband, and their two children.

Kelsey McCain has garnered more than five-and-a-half million views on the social media platform with her “tiny house” videos, showing their home with 756 square feet of space – including the porch.

“We started this about four years ago in November of 2019,” McCain said in one video, in response to questions from viewers. “Overall, I think it’s a very comfortable house, even with having two kids here.”

McCain and her family took a 14-foot by 40-foot repossessed shed, which she purchased for a little more than $9,436, receiving a 10% discount.

The shed is situated on family land, where she adjoins her parents and other relatives.

They eventually added a 14-foot by 14-foot bedroom addition as “it started to get a little tight.”

The house project got other cost-saving measures, such as reused cabinets from a friend’s remodel, reused sampler windows from a family business, a hand-me-down family tub, and other items. McCain said her father also did the carpentry, electrical and plumbing work.

“Basically, he built this whole thing,” she said. “We helped him, but he was the man with the plan.”

McCain said she chose the tiny house option before her marriage because of the cost of rent. The laundry and other items are kept in a shed in the backyard.
