Alabama woman killed by dog; pet put down by family member

An Alabama woman was killed when she was attacked by her dog inside its pen.

Tuscaloosa County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the dog attack shortly before 9:30 p.m. Thursday. The location was near the Berry community in the northern part of the county, said Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Capt. Marty Sellers.

Deputies arrived to find the 62-year-old woman dead inside the dog pen. Her identity is not being released.

Sellers said the victim’s husband had tried to call her and could not reach her. He asked another family member to go check on her and that’s when the victim was discovered.

When the unidentified family entered the pen, the dog attacked him as well.

“He was forced to put the dog down,’’ Sellers said.

Authorities said the dog was a large breed, but they didn’t know the specific breed.

“The family had never had issues with it before,’’ Sellers said.

No addition information is being released due privacy considerations for the family, he said.
