Alabama Walmart shooting that left 1 dead may have been self-defense, police say
Authorities have released the name of a man shot to death in an Alabama Walmart and said the deadly shooting may have been in self-defense.
Enterprise police on Thursday identified the slain man as Richard Matthew Smith. He was 43 and lived in New Brockton.
Police initially said both men were armed with guns, but on Thursday said Smith was brandishing a knife.
Capt. Bill Haglund said officers responded at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday to the store on Boll Weevil Circle. An altercation that started in the parking lot continued in the store.
That’s when Smith, who was reportedly armed with a knife, threatened the other person. The other person, who has not been identified, pulled a gun and fired multiple rounds at Smith.
Smith was pronounced dead on the scene.
Haglund said witness testimony and evidence support a possible self-defense ruling.
The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are conferring with the Coffee County District Attorney’s Office. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency also assisted.
