Alabama Waffle House employee says he was fired for refusing to serve Trump supporter
An Alabama Waffle House employee says he lost his job because he refused to serve a President Donald Trump supporter.
The former employee, Harry Black, recounted the incident at the Helena Waffle House location in the description posted to a GoFundMe he started.
The altercation occurred Friday and Black told AL.com that he lost his job Saturday morning.
Accompanying the fundraiser is a screenshot from a Facebook post sent to a private group that questions throwing people out for wearing a Trump shirt.
Black refers to the Trump supporter as a “nazi” and said he told the man he wouldn’t cook for “fascists” which angered the customer.
“I told a nazi I wouldn’t cook for him so he and his goons tried to catch me outside and then he had his mom call store and get mad,” Black said.
Black said that he was told by the shift supervisor to, “beat it,” after the incident.
But Black remains proud of the fact that the Trump supporter did not receive his food.
“I am unemployed but that guy never did get his food,” Black said.
Black started a GoFundMe Saturday with a donation goal set at $4,500 and as of Monday he has gained about $2,700.
Black said he is blessed to have so much support from his hometown and said he believes Helena was more liberal than most areas of Alabama.
In the 2024 presidential election Trump won Shelby County with 69.9 percent of votes.
“[Helena] tends to be a lot more liberal than many parts of Alabama, and many of us here are simply very angry with the state of things,” Black said. “We don’t like these deportations, we don’t like the budget cuts, and we don’t like the racism.”
Black said his decision to refuse service was “emotional” due to being tired from working a long shift and upset over Trump’s policies personally impacting his family.
Despite losing his job, Black said that he believes, “it was the right thing to do and I would do it again.”
