Alabama, UNC set for Sweet 16 rematch in SEC-ACC challenge

Alabama and North Carolina will get a rematch of last year’s Sweet 16 upset this winter in the SEC-ACC Challenge, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. The game is set for Wednesday, Dec. 4.

The No. 4 seed Crimson Tide upset the No. 1 seed Tar Heels in Los Angeles on the way to the Final Four.

It was one of several thrilling games Alabama and UNC have played in recent seasons. Alabama won a quadruple overtime game against UNC in 2022. Alabama is 6-7 all-time against UNC.

The next matchup will come this fall in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Alabama faced Clemson at Coleman Coliseum last year in the first edition of the challenge. Clemson won the game 85-77 on Nov. 28. The two sides would meet again in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Alabama won that time and earned a trip to the Final Four.

This is the second year of the SEC-ACC challenge, which replaced previous matchups against Big-12 teams.

The game adds to an already difficult non-conference schedule which is expected to include games against Illinois, Houston, Purdue and Creighton.

Alabama also recently found out its 2024-25 SEC opponents. Those break down as the following.

Home and Away: Auburn, Kentucky, Mississippi State

Home: Georgia, Florida, LSU, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt

Away: Arkansas, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M

The newly expanded SEC schedule includes three home and away opponents with two as permanent matchups and one rotating team.

The rest of the schedule dates will be announced closer to the season.
