Alabama teen defends family member during domestic assault, kills attacker, police say
A 28-year-old man was killed in a morning shooting in Dothan by a teen who was trying to protect a family member, police said.
The teen is not expected to be charged in the deadly shooting, which was witnessed by at least two other people and captured on surveillance footage.
Officers were dispatched at 5 a.m. Monday to reports of a person shot at an apartment in the 700 block of Alabama Avenue, said Lt. Scott Owens.
They arrived and began life-saving measures on Johnny Oliver, who was ultimately pronounced dead on the scene.
The investigation showed that Oliver was assaulting a female in the apartment, Owens said.
The teen was able to get hold of the gun that Oliver brought to the home.
“After several demands by the juvenile to stop the assault, the juvenile fired a single round that struck Oliver in the upper torso,” Owens said. “The explanation of the shooting was corroborated by both witnesses on scene as well as video surveillance.”
The case will be forwarded to Houston/Henry County District Attorney Russ Goodman for review, but Owens said no criminal charges are expected.
“The belief among investigators and the district attorney’s office was that the juvenile was acting in defense of a person, which is a legal defense allowed by law,” Owens said. “The case will remain open until a final decision is made by the District Attorney’s Office.”
