Alabama teacher arrested on public intoxication charges after random search
A north Alabama teacher was arrested on public intoxication and other charges Wednesday after sheriff’s deputies noticed he was “under the influence of some substance” as they performed random drug searches.
Franklin County Sheriff’s Office’s K9s alerted deputies when they sniffed a suspicious odor on Rodney Waddle’s classroom desk at Belgreen High School in Franklin County, the sheriff’s office said.
Waddle was taken out of his classroom and consented to searches of his personal vehicle and a vehicle owned by the Franklin County Board of Education that he pulled up to the school in.
The K9s alerted deputies to odors in both vehicles, according to the sheriff’s office, and deputies noticed during the search of Waddle’s personal vehicle that he “was under the influence of some substance which caused impairment.”
Deputies found a controlled substance prescribed to Waddle in his personal vehicle.
After a field sobriety test, the teacher was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.
Waddle was also charged with two counts of reckless endangerment because there were students in the Franklin County BOE-issued vehicle he was driving, witnesses told the sheriff’s office.
Franklin County Schools Superintendent Greg Hamilton could not immediately be reached about Waddle’s employment status with the district.
