Alabama teacher arrested for being intoxicated at school, authorities say

A north Alabama teacher was arrested Monday after authorities say she was intoxicated on school grounds.

Melissa Ann Harris, 49, of Fort Payne, was arrested and charged with public intoxication, possession of alcohol on school grounds and possession of a controlled substance, Fort Payne police said Monday.

Officials with the Fort Payne school system contacted police Monday to report a suspicion of an intoxicated teacher, authorities said.

A school resource officer responded to the unidentified school and arrested Harris after speaking with her, police said.

Harris was also found with a prescription medication that she did not have a prescription for, according to authorities.

Harris was taken to the Fort Payne City Jail and then transferred to the DeKalb County jail, where she was being held pending bond as of late Monday afternoon, police said.
