Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell running for 2nd term

Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell has announced he is running for second term next year.

Mitchell, a Republican, was elected in 2018. The primary will be March 5.

Before he was elected to the court, Mitchell was a partner with Maynard, Cooper & Gale in Birmingham.

Mitchell is a Rotarian, a member of the Federalist Society, and serves on the board of directors for Cornerstone School, an inner-city Christian school, according to a news release from his campaign.

“The people of Alabama deserve a Supreme Court that is committed to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law,” Mitchell said. “I am seeking reelection to ensure our court has a strong conservative majority and protects the freedom and prosperity we enjoy in our home state.”

Mitchell attended Homewood High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern College, where he played on the school’s 1995 national championship basketball team.

Mitchell earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. He lives in Homewood with his wife, Elizabeth, an Auburn University graduate, and their four children. They attend the Church of the Highlands.
