Alabama student arrested after alleged school shooting threat
A student is under arrest after an alleged threat made on social media of a school shooting at Dothan Preparatory Academy, authorities announced Friday morning.
Dothan City School officials were made aware about 8:30 p.m. Thursday of threats of violence circulating on social media, according to a statement issued by the school system.
Police were immediately notified and launched an investigation.
Lt. Scott Owens said extra security was put in place Friday morning at Dothan schools as a precaution to deter violence.
Once the source of the threat was identified, the juvenile was taken into custody on a charge first-degree making a terrorist threat. The student is not being identified because of his or her age.
Owens did not specify which school the suspect attended.
Owens said more arrests could be made. He thanked those who came forward with information.
“When threats are made, regardless of the intent, the Dothan Police Department always takes those situations seriously and will hold those who make threats accountable in accordance with state law,’’ he said. We appreciate those that knew of the threat who came forward to share their concerns with the Dothan Police Department.
“Dothan City Schools will follow up and apply appropriate disciplinary action according to their student handbook,’’ Owens said. “Just as Dothan City Schools said in their release, the Dothan Police Department also encourages parents to talk with their children about the seriousness of threats and the importance of reporting suspicious activities or threats to a trusted adult or school resource officer.”
Anyone with additional information about the incident or any potential threat is asked to contact police or Central Alabama Crimestoppers at 334-215-STOP, 833-AL1-STOP, or at P3TIPS.com.
Eufaula City Schools canceled all classes and after-school activities Thursday after receiving a “threat of violence,” officials said.
It was unclear what type of threat was made, but officials said it was targeted at the district’s high school.
Also Thursday, Walker County officials announced an “increased security presence” at Oakman area schools Thursday following threats made on social media.
The purported threats came on the same day that a 14-year-old shot and killed two teachers and two students at a Georgia high school, according to news reports.
