Alabama State Trooper shot following pursuit acted with ‘true courage and heroism,’ ALEA leader says
An Alabama State Trooper is recovering after he was shot in the line of duty following a Sunday-evening pursuit in south Alabama.
Authorities on Monday identified the trooper as Cpl. Jeremy Alford.
The exchange of gunfire left one suspect dead, and two other people injured.
Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Hal Taylor visited Alford at the hospital Monday morning.
“I am extremely relieved and thankful to share that he is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery,’’ Taylor said. “Cpl. Alford acted with true courage and heroism over the course of the incident and was able to secure the scene and ensure public safety while injured.”

Alford is a true professional and public servant, dedicated to keeping the citizens of his local community and the state of Alabama safe,’’ Taylor said. “I ask that you please continue to keep Cpl. Alford and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers as we all look forward to a speedy recovery.”
Trooper Sgt. Jeremy Burkett said the incident began at 6:30 p.m. Sunday Alford tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on Interstate 65 in Conecuh County. The driver failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued.
The chase traveled into Escambia County where the suspect vehicle left the road.
“Once off the roadway, an officer-involved shooting occurred,’’ Burkett said a news a release. He did not elaborate on how many people, or who, fired shots.
Burkett said one person died, and two others were injured. The injured were taken to an undisclosed hospital.
The name of the slain suspect has not yet been released.
The State Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe. Once complete, the findings will be turned over the Escambia County District Attorney’s Office.
