Alabama State Trooper shoots himself in the finger during traffic stop

An Alabama State Trooper shot himself in the finger during a traffic stop in Birmingham.

The incident happened about 1 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 59 near Oporto-Madrid Boulevard.

Birmingham police Officer De’Rell Freeman said the trooper stopped a vehicle on I-59 and there were guns in the driver’s vehicle.

The trooper called for backup, and while other officers were in route, he accidentally shot himself in the finger.

The trooper was able to drive himself to the hospital.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the shooting involved the trooper’s gun or the guns found in the driver’s vehicle.
