Alabama State Sen. Tim Melson back in Alabama after cardiac arrest in South Korea
State Sen. Tim Melson is back in the United States after suffering a cardiac arrest while in South Korea.
Melson’s daughter Ellie posted an update Sunday on Facebook about her father’s condition.
“Happy to report that we are now back in Alabama where my dad will receive the remainder of his care. Your continued prayers are appreciated,” she wrote. “And to South Korea, the doctors, and rest of his care team — we may have spoken two languages, but one thing was clearly communicated: kindness. We’ll forever be grateful for the role you played in my dad’s treatment and recovery.”
Melson, R-Florence, suffered the cardiac arrest July 27 while he was trying to recruit businesses and STEM teachers to Alabama.
Last week, Ellie Melson requested no visitors for the senator “outside of immediate family at this point in time. His body has been through a lot & needs rest to continue towards a full recovery.” Tim Melson told the Alabama Daily News last week he was “looking forward to getting back to Alabama.”
It was reported that State Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, who was among the legislators on the trip, administered CPR to Melson.
Melson was elected to the state Senate in 2014. He is a retired anesthesiologist and a medical researcher.
He is perhaps best known at the State House for sponsoring the bill lawmakers passed in 2021 to legal medical marijuana in Alabama.
