Alabama state offices will close Monday to honor Confederate leader’s birthday
Alabama state government offices will be closed Monday to mark the birthday of the president of the Confederacy.
Jefferson Davis’ birthday is a state holiday in Alabama.
Florida and Mississippi are the only other states that pay tribute to the Confederate leader with a state holiday.
Davis was born in Kentucky on June 3, 1808.
In 2025, his birthday is observed in Alabama on June 2.
Davis’ birthday is one of three holidays in Alabama that commemorate Confederate leaders: Robert E. Lee’s birthday, which is commemorated in January on the same day as Martin Luther King Day; Confederate Memorial Day in April; and Davis’s birthday in June.
State offices and some agencies are closed but federal services- including mail delivery – will continue.
