Alabama staffer, DC candidate leaves for NFL job
Cross one name off the list of potential hires in the Alabama defensive coordinator sweepstakes.
Todd Grantham, a former DC at a few SEC schools, is leaving for an assistant coaching job with the New Orleans Saints, ESPN first reported Friday. The network also reported Grantham was interviewed for the Alabama defensive coordinator job that’s been open since Pete Golding left for Ole Miss on Jan. 13.
Before coming to Alabama as an analyst in 2022, Grantham was the defensive coordinator at Georgia, Louisville, Mississippi State and Florida. He was fired in Gainesville not long before Dan Mullen got the boot in November 2021.
At Alabama, Grantham arrived with a few other high-profile analysts in former Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley and LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger.
“Todd Grantham and Derek Dooley have worked for me before,” Saban said last March. “I’ve known Zach Mettenberger for a long time. He’s Ken Whisenhunt’s son-in-law, and Ken and I are really good friends. Derek has worked for me in the past. He’s been an offensive coordinator in this league. He’s coached in the league. Todd’s been a defensive coordinator in college and this league for a long time.”
