The 24 finalists for girls basketball class player of the year were named today by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

The top three in each of eight classes are eligible for class Player of the Year while Miss Basketball is chosen from the players of the year. All finalists are first-team selections to the ASWA girls all-state team.

There are eight repeat finalists, including three-time Player of the Year candidate Ace Austin of Spring Garden, who is the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year and the reigning Class 1A Player of the Year.

Edgewood Academy’s Lindsey Brown is also a three-time finalist.

Class 6A Hazel Green’s Leah Brooks and Class 2A Mars Hill Bible’s Belle Hill were named last year’s class Player of the Year.

Other two-time finalists are Class 7A Syriah Daniels of Auburn and Jabria Lindsey of Central-Phenix City, Class 5A Tamya Smith of Pleasant Grove and AISA’s Takayla Davis of Glenwood.

Boys and girls class Player of the Year winners, Super All-State teams along with Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball will be announced at a luncheon — sponsored by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association — on April 16 in Montgomery. The awards are sponsored by Alfa Insurance.
