Alabama spends a lot of money on fireworks, but weâre not No. 1
With the Fourth of July coming up, it’s no secret: Alabamians love fireworks.
Our dogs may not like them very much, but folks in the Yellowhammer state sure do. They like them enough to dole out some serious cash, too.
According to fire protection services provider Allegiant Fire, Alabama spent the fifth most on fireworks out of any state in the nation between 2020 and 2021, when controlling for population. The state spent a total of nearly $30 million during that time, according to the study. That’s almost $6 per person.
Alabama trailed a handful of states across the nation in spending, but the biggest spender was Missouri. Residents of the Show Me State want you to show them fireworks, apparently.

Missouri spent more than $71 million on fireworks imports, or nearly $12 per person – double what Alabama spent. No other state spent more than $10 per person.
Following Missouri were Kansas, South Carolina and South Dakota.
The state that seemed to like fireworks the least was Massachusetts, which spent barely anything on fireworks – just $0.08 per resident. Not even enough to buy some snakes and sparklers.
And surprisingly, Georgia came it at second to last, spending just $0.13 per person.
