Alabama softball tops Missouri 7-2 in SEC tournament

Alabama waited out a five-hour weather delay before beating Missouri 7-2 in SEC softball tournament action late Wednesday night at Bogle Park in Fayetteville, Ark.

Ashley Prange homered twice and drove in three runs as the fifth-seeded Crimson Tide (39-17) advanced to meet No. 4 Arkansas, the tournament host and defending SEC tournament champion. That quarterfinal game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, with TV coverage on SEC Network.

On Wednesday, Alabama never trailed as Prange — a first-team All-SEC pick at third base this season — pounded a solo homer to center with two outs in the first inning of a game that began at 9 p.m. local time. The Crimson Tide added three runs in the second on Kali Heivilin’s RBI single, Kristen White’s squeeze bunt and Jenna Johnson’s sacrifice fly to lead 4-0.

That was more than enough for Alabama pitcher Montana Fouts, who limited No. 13 seed Missouri to Alex Honnold’s third-inning RBI single and Kara Daly’s fifth-inning RBI single in a complete-game effort. Fouts (23-9) allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out 10, giving the All-SEC right-hander 302 strikeouts for the season.

Alabama added another run in the fourth when Bailey Dowling scored on a wild pitch. After the Tigers (34-24) cut the lead to 5-2, Prange put the game away with a two-run shot to left-center in the bottom of the fifth, her team-best 15th homer of the season.

Missouri starter Jordan Weber (12-12) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) in 1 1/3 innings. Reliever Laurin Krings was tagged for three runs in three innings.

Wednesday’s weather delay — which began in the eighth inning of South Carolina’s 1-0 win over Texas A&M — altered the tournament schedule, with Wednesday’s late game between No. 8 Florida and No. 9 Kentucky pushed to Thursday morning and one quarterfinal game moved from Thursday to Friday.
