Alabama Sen. Katie Britt gives GOP response to Biden’s State of the Union: Watch live
Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., has made history ever since she was won her race for U.S. Senate in 2022, when she became the youngest woman elected to the upper chamber.
On Thursday, she will do so again — as the first Alabamian to give the rebuttal to the president’s State of the Union address since the practice began in 1966.

At 42 years old, Britt is the youngest sitting senator.
“I am truly honored and grateful for the opportunity to speak directly to my fellow Americans and have a candid conversation about the future of our nation,” Britt said in a statement last week when it was announced she would give the GOP’s response to President Biden’s address.
“The Republican Party is the party of hardworking parents and families, and I’m looking forward to putting this critical perspective front and center. There is no doubt that President Biden’s failed presidency has made America weaker and more vulnerable at every turn. At this decisive moment in our country’s history, it’s time for the next generation to step up and preserve the American Dream for our children and our grandchildren.”
On Election Day 2022, Britt, a former chief of staff to ex-Sen. Richard Shelby and the former president of the Business Council of Alabama, became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate in the state. At 40 years old on Election Day, she was also the youngest person elected to the chamber.
Britt was the last Republican in Alabama’s congressional delegation to endorse Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, giving her blessing to the former president just hours before the GOP presidential debate in Tuscaloosa in December.
She is considered to be one of Trump’s possible vice presidential picks, and half of Alabama Republican voters favor Trump selecting Britt.
Newsmax TV’s Mark Halperin called Britt a “sleeper” pick for vice president in November.
“I am going all in on this. I just think, compared to the other alternatives, her upsides are huge, her downsides are very minimal and, above all else, she can go to the suburbs of Philadelphia, Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Phoenix and most of the other people being talked about [as potential Trump running mates] would have trouble doing that and she speaks fluent MAGA,” he said, according to Newsmax.
During an appearance on “CBS Mornings” in November to publicize her memoir, Britt sidestepped a question on whether she would like to be Trump’s running mate.
“Oh goodness, I am just working hard in the U.S. Senate …,” she said.
