Alabama schools closing Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to potential for snow, ice, freezing temps

After Gov. Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency for 25 Alabama counties ahead of the threat of winter weather, a few Birmingham area school systems began announcing they would be closed on Tuesday.

Most schools statewide will be closed Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The counties included in Ivey’s declaration are Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Fayette, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, Pickens, St. Clair, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston.

Winter storm warnings have been issued for parts of north and west Alabama, which could get up to 6 inches of snow starting tonight and lasting into Tuesday.
