Mobile County Public School System Superintendent Chresal Threadgill announced Wednesday that all Mobile County Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 12 due to severe weather anticipated from Hurricane Francine.

In an email sent to all MCPSS employees and families Threadgill stated that schools will be closed on Thursday but will return to normal schedules on Friday.

“All MCPSS schools and offices will be closed on Thursday, September 12, 2024, due to Hurricane Francine and its projected impact on our area,” Threadgill said. “We will return to our normal school schedule on Friday. Please stay safe and informed of the weather.”

Hurricane Francine is expected to make landfall in Louisiana late this afternoon as a Category 1 Hurricane. Francine is currently expected to remain west of the Mobile area however, because Alabama is on the eastern side of Francine’s core the state will potentially receive some of the worst weather.

This means that Mobile is projected to endure possible tornadoes, heavy rain, flooding, deadly rip currents and strong winds of at least 39 miles per hour. Mobile is expected to experience a risk level of 1 out of 5 on Thursday.

Nearly all of Alabama will have a risk for severe weather on Thursday.SPC

Mobile County and Baldwin County officials have already released tips and recommendations for how individuals should be preparing as Francine gets closer to landfall.

Baldwin County Public Schools announced that schools would remain open on Thursday.

As Francine moves further inland by Friday much of the adverse weather is projected to have dissipated in the Mobile area.
