Alabama scene among New York Times’ ‘photos that defined the modern era’

One photo taken in Alabama, an iconic reminder of the segregation era, is among New York Times picks for “The 25 Photos that Defined the Modern Age.”

The story, published earlier this month in T: The New York Times Style Magazine, features an expert panel discussion on the photos. Co-author M.H. Miller notes right up front that the constraints of the project – only 25 photos, and only ones taken since 1955 – resulted in the omission of legendary photographers “that a reasonable person might expect to have been included.” The mix was further complicated by a decision to include fine art and journalistic photos.
