Alabama sales tax exemption on diapers, baby formula, feminine hygiene products awaits Ivey’s signature
Alabama lawmakers on Thursday gave final passage to a bill to exempt diapers, baby formula, feminine hygiene products, and other items from the state sales tax.
The bill, HB152 by Rep. Neil Rafferty, D-Birmingham, passed the Senate by a vote of 34-0.
The House had passed the bill in March.
It goes to Gov. Kay Ivey, who can sign it into law.
If the governor signs the bill, it will take effect Sept. 1, 2025 and will expire Aug, 31, 2028.
The exemption from the 4% state sales tax would save taxpayers an estimated $13 million a year.
The exemption would apply to baby formula, baby bottles, baby wipes, breast milk pumping equipment, diapers, maternity clothing, and menstrual hygiene products.
Earlier on Thursday, the Senate passed a bill to cut the state sales tax on food from 3% to 2% effective Sept. 1. That bill awaits final approval in the House.
