Alabama safety Keon Sabb named SEC’s defensive player of the week
Alabama football safety Keon Sabb made his presence known throughout his debut with the Crimson Tide on Saturday. The Michigan transfer picked off Western Kentucky QB TJ Finley twice in the first quarter during UA’s blowout victory.
For his performance against the Hilltoppers, Sabb was named the SEC’s defensive player of the week.
“Keon Sabb, a guy was at the right spot at the right time and made the plays,” Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said after the game. “That’s what it’s all about. A lot of guys will be where they need to be and all that. A little special play here and there maybe goes through their hands.
“Keon, you can just see he was ready for that moment. He pounced when the opportunity came and made some really big plays and got our offense some great field position there early in the game.”
Both of Sabb’s interceptions led to offensive touchdowns for the Crimson Tide. He said after the game that he felt he should have run at least one of them back for a pick-six.
“It felt good,” Sabb said. “Should have scored, though. Should have scored. It’s alright. More to come.”
Sabb transferred in from Michigan this offseason. He won a national championship with the Wolverines in 2023, helping UM beat the Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff’s Rose Bowl semifinal.
He wasn’t the only Alabama player to be recognized by the conference for his efforts in Saturday’s win. Wide receiver Ryan Williams was named the SEC’s freshman of the week for his performance.
Alabama returns to action on Saturday to face South Florida.
