Alabama Roots: Who’s still unsigned in NFL free agency?

Eddie Jackson has started 100 NFL regular-season games. The safety has been voted a first-team All-Pro and chosen for the Pro Bowl twice.

But the former Alabama standout doesn’t have a team for the 2024 season yet. And he’s not the only player still on the open market eight weeks after the start of NFL free agency and with teams approaching the start of the final phase of their offseason programs later this month.

Jackson is among the 14 players from Alabama high schools and colleges who ended the 2023 season under contract but don’t have a deal for 2024.

Thirteen of those players became free agents at 3 p.m. CDT March 13 when the NFL’s 2024 business year began and their 2023 contracts ended.

Jackson was among seven players with Alabama football roots who were released between the end of the season and that date to clear salary-cap room for their teams. He’s the only one who has not been signed.

The players from Alabama high schools and colleges who remain available in NFL free agency include:

· Linebacker Kwon Alexander (Oxford), who suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the ninth game of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2023 season.

· Linebacker Zach Cunningham (Pinson Valley), who started 10 games and recorded 85 tackles for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023.

· Safety Rudy Ford (New Hope, Auburn), who started nine games, made 71 tackles and intercepted two passes for the Green Bay Packers in 2023.

· Running back Derrick Gore (Alabama), who had three carries for 26 yards in six games with the Washington Commanders in 2023.

· Center J.C. Hassenauer (Alabama), who missed the New York Giants’ 2023 season because of a torn triceps.

· Wide receiver Julio Jones (Foley, Alabama), who had 11 receptions for 74 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games with the Philadelphia Eagles in his 13th NFL season.

· Defensive end Carl Lawson (Auburn), who played in only six games for the New York Jets a year after starting every contest and recording seven sacks in 2022.

· Long snapper Carson Tinker (Alabama), who handled the long-snapping for the final four games of the regular season and a playoff contest for the Los Angeles Rams.

· Offensive tackle Prince Tega Wanogho (Edgewood Academy, Auburn) played in the first three games of the 2023 season for the Kansas City Chiefs before a quadriceps injury sidelined him for the rest of the campaign.

· Defensive tackle Nick Williams (Minor, Samford), who had 32 tackles, seven tackles for loss and one sack in 14 games, with six starts, for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023.

Another player who became a free agent on March 13 who doesn’t have a contract isn’t looking for one. Running back Damien Harris (Alabama) announced his retirement on March 25.

NFL free agency has entered a new phase with teams assessing their rosters and personnel needs after the NFL Draft on April 25-27 and picking over the eligible but undrafted rookies. Former Greenville High School and Auburn standout Marlon Davidson re-signed with the Tennessee Titans this week.
