Alabama Roots: Top 10 NBA career scorers
Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James became the NBA’s career scoring leader on Tuesday night when he broke the record that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had held since April 5, 1984
James passed Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387 points. Abdul-Jabbar had become the NBA’s all-time scoring leader when he surpassed the 31,419 points that had been scored by Wilt Chamberlain, who now ranks seventh in league history.
The most points scored by a player from an Alabama high school or college are the 24,941 of Artis Gilmore – if Gilmore’s ABA career is included. Gilmore ranks 28th on the NBA/ABA scoring list. His total includes 9,362 points from his ABA career.
If only NBA points are considered, then Charles Barkley is the Alabama-roots leader with 23,757, a total that’s 34th on the NBA/ABA list and 29th on the NBA-only list.
