Alabama Roots: Super Bowl LVIII connections

Five players from Alabama high schools and colleges are on the active rosters of the Super Bowl teams for this season’s NFL championship game.

The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs will square off at 5:30 p.m. CST Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to determine the champion of the NFL’s 2023 season.

On Sunday, Kansas City defeated the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 in the AFC Championship Game and San Francisco defeated the Detroit Lions 34-31 in the NFC Championship Game.

Those with Alabama football roots eligible to play in Super Bowl LVIII include:

· Chiefs defensive lineman Neil Farrell Jr. (Murphy) joined Kansas City from the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a sixth-round draft choice on Aug. 29. Farrell played 41 defensive snaps in three regular-season games and saw action in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game.

· Forty-Niners cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. (South Alabama) got off to a late start in his rookie season as a knee injury kept him on the physically-unable-to-perform list from Aug. 29 until Nov. 18. When activated, Luter became a regular on special teams with 101 plays in seven regular-season games. He got an extended run in San Francisco’s secondary in the regular-season finale when the 49ers rested their top players for the playoffs and made two special-teams tackles in San Francisco’s playoff opener.

· Chiefs running back La’Mical Perine (Theodore) has been on the active roster since Dec. 24. Kansas City signed Perine to its 53-player active roster after using the maximum three elevations on the practice squad for the running back. Perine’s contributions in three regular-season and three playoff games have come mainly on special teams. But in Kansas City’s regular-season finale, Perine ran for 76 yards on 21 carries and caught three passes for 33 yards as the starting running back.

· Chiefs wide receiver Justyn Ross (Central-Phenix City) spent his rookie season on injured reserve, but played in 10 regular-season games and two playoff contests in 2023. It probably would have been more, but Ross was out six games for violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy. Ross has six receptions for 53 yards this season.

· Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney (Blount) has not played since Dec. 17 because of hip and ankle injuries. But he did practice on a limited basis in preparation for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game. During the regular season, Toney had 27 receptions for 169 yards and one touchdown, ran 11 times for 31 yards and returned six punts for 58 yards. The former high school quarterback was one of the standouts in the Chiefs’ 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in last season’s Super Bowl. He caught a 5-yard touchdown pass and had the longest punt return in Super Bowl history at 65 yards.

Six other players from Alabama high schools and colleges are on the rosters of the Super Bowl teams:

· Chiefs defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs (Alabama) is on the practice squad. Buggs started his fifth NFL season with the Detroit Lions. He had played in 10 games, with three starts, when Detroit waived him on Jan. 2. Kansas City signed Buggs for its practice squad two days later, but he has not played for the Chiefs.

· Forty-Niners tight end Cameron Latu (Alabama) is on injured reserve. After joining San Francisco in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Latu sustained a meniscus injury in the 49ers’ preseason finale, and he’s had to spend his entire rookie season on injured reserve.

· Chiefs quarterback Chris Oladokun (Samford) is his second season as a member of the practice squad. He entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022 and joined Kansas City after being waived at the end of the preseason that year.

· Chiefs tight end Gerrit Prince (UAB) is in his second NFL season and his first on the Kansas City practice squad. Prince spent his rookie season on the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad.

· Chiefs offensive tackle Prince Tega Wanogho (Edgewood Academy, Auburn) returned to practice last week and could be restored to Kansas City’s active roster before the Super Bowl. Wanogho has been on injured reserve since Sept. 27 after he sustained a quadriceps tear in a 41-10 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sep. 24. Wanogho is in his third season with the Chiefs and began 2023 as Kansas City’s swing tackle.

· Chiefs wide receiver Montrell Washington (Samford) joined Kansas City’s practice squad after being waived by the Denver Broncos at the end of the preseason. As a rookie, Washington had returned 32 punts for an 8.5-yard average and 18 kickoffs for an 18.9-yard average for Denver in 2022. Washington spent part of the 2023 on Kansas City’s active roster. In six regular-season games, he returned eight punts for 61 yards and one kickoff for 20 yards.
